Facebook announced recently that they are developing a desktop application for Messenger. At F8, the company's annual developer's conference, Asha Srivastava, Facebook's VP of Messenger Consumer Product Products announced that they have made a new application for Facebook's main platform: the desktop. This new desktop Messenger has been built from scratch and is designed to work seamlessly with the new Windows Messenger. It's not yet available, but it looks promising.
In a separate blog post, Jessica Dolcourt, head of Facebook's Platform group, described how the new Messenger will work. “When you're chatting on Messenger, you'll see a sidebar with your recent conversations, your notifications and the new desktop application,” she wrote. “And the application will have a similar design to what's currently on Facebook's mobile phones, which means that it's also very easy to find.
The new desktop application will make browsing photos easier by using the same interface as the mobile apps. It will also let users browse their messages, but in an expanded format so that they can see everything they've sent to others.
Facebook is currently testing a similar feature called “Chats Timeline”, which allows users to see their recent conversations, photos, and videos from each person in their contacts list. This function is similar to what Google uses for its new Allo chat app. As of yet, no one knows if it will show other apps. This will likely be a beta feature that is open to everyone when the final version is released.
Facebook is also testing a new feature that lets you access your messages from any computer with a wireless connection. This may be useful in a work environment where you need access to your messages on a regular basis, or where you can't access your phone.
Messenger might not be as popular on the desktop as it is on mobile phones, but it will likely continue to grow in popularity. Many people use a smartphone Messenger, making it difficult to keep up with the constantly growing number of new friends. This may be why Facebook has chosen to launch this desktop application instead of a smartphone version. It also might make it easier to manage your contacts, and messages, because you can look up just the information you need in a few clicks.
Another big advantage of the desktop app is that you can still keep in touch with your friends even when you're not online. Instead of having to log in to Facebook to chat, you can send a message or call another friend directly. However, you won't be able to receive messages through your desktop app. Although the desktop app does not have all the features of the mobile version, it's clear that Facebook is interested in keeping it as functional as possible, because the company is still focusing on improving the mobile version of its app.
Messenger will be available to everyone who owns a smartphone. It will likely come free of charge, but you may need to pay for access to the desktop version. If you want to try it out, just go to the website and get the instructions.
